Construction will begin in March on $100,000 of improvements to the trail along the southern boundary of Wattle Park.

Bob Stensholt, State MP for Burwood today joined Gavin Jennings, Minister for Environment and Climate to announce the timetable for the works which are being funded by the Brumby Labor Government.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to maintain and improve our world-class network of parks,” Bob Stensholt said.

“Millions of people enjoy Victoria’s parks every year and these improvements to Wattle Park will bring a whole new level of experience for visitors.”

Bob Stensholt said the works would maintain and improve the park while retaining its historic feel.

Wattle Park is one of Melbourne’s most popular urban parks with approximately 500,000 visits per annum,” he said.

“The park has a great mix of historic buildings, natural and complementary formal park landscape. It was opened in 1917 and was modelled on the American trolley parks which were designed to draw customers to the end of new tram lines.

"The two W7 class trams situated in the main picnic area have always been popular with local kids.”

"The park also includes a 'lone pine' grown from the seed brought back from the Gallipoli campaign which overlooks the oval, in memory of soldiers from the 24th Battalion who were killed during the first World War.”

In keeping with the strong community ties, Mr Jennings also announced the Brumby Labor Government would provide $5000 to support the popular Wattle Day Festival for 2010. The Festival will take place in early September 2010.

Wattle Park is approximately 55 hectares of open space and offers park visitors a wide range of recreation opportunities.

The park has a formal picnic area, an oval, tennis courts, a nine-hole public golf course, extensive natural areas and multi purpose trail network to provide for a positive visitor experience.

It also has an active friends group and heritage group, with the latter holding an annual ANZAC memorial service.
