Getting to class will be easier for students returning to University this week, thanks to a new bus route that begins today, Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula announced while visiting Box Hill.

The new Route 768 will operate on weekdays between the bus interchange at Box Hill Station and Deakin University in Burwood.

Mr Pakula said that the new bus Route 768 was great news for university students and staff.

Deakin University students and staff are the big winners from the introduction of this new bus route,” Mr Pakula said.

“We know that students come to Deakin University from all over Melbourne, and that many catch the train, the tram or other buses to Box Hill and then take a connecting bus to the university.

“With the introduction of new Route 768, there are now five bus routes and 286 trips a day between Box Hill and Deakin University – which means shorter wait times and more frequent connections to the university.”

Member for Burwood Bob Stensholt welcomed the introduction of the new route.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to ensure students and young people have affordable public transport and alternatives to travelling by car,” Bob Stensholt said.

“By providing more transport options from Box Hill, it will relieve some of the crowding on the Deakin University buses and provide students with more frequent and affordable travel options.”

Mr Pakula said that the introduction of the new route built upon other recent bus upgrades for the university.

“In April we extended bus Route 281 to Deakin University, which created 210 extra trips between Box Hill and the University each week. And this new Route 768 means a further 145 trips per week to Deakin University,” he said

“That means that this year, in total, we will have doubled the number of bus trips between Box Hill and Deakin University.”

Mr Pakula said the new bus route was part of the Brumby Labor Government’s plan to boost local bus services.

“This new Deakin University bus route is part of the Victorian Transport Plan’s $500 million commitment to improving local bus services across Melbourne,” he said.
